The irony, of course, is that the Gospel's in and of themselves are not true, the entire thing a patchwork of fiction and parables designed to illustrate the ideal life and maintain a certain social order. This is not to disagree with the message(s), but rather point out that those people who harp upon Jesus as a real person are rather missing the point and almost always missing the practice, much as Cinderella was not a real person and her not being real in no ways impacts the lesson of the story, so does Jesus's life (and death) become irrelevant in that they are meant solely as instructional aids.

What I find curious is how the Bible has numerous injunctions against false (other) gods, and against worshiping graven images (the same as many other religions) - yet almost the entirety of Christianity is based upon the symbolism of Christ on a Crucifix, or the images of the Saints, thereby almost entirely devaluing it's message in it's attempts to make it "accessible". And that said I love to collect religious kitsch and memorabilia, although I'm not bowing down before it, merely jogging a certain line of thought...
