I seem to have a problem counting to very high numbers. It's too cold to relocate the last remaining mouse, and so I let him root through the garbage. But there comes this strange sound from the ceiling of the house, chewing, rustling. It brings to mind the opening scenes of "The Exorcist". The rustling stops and I shortly see another mouse on the floor, less a mouse than a rat, King Rat, comparatively huge. He(?) seems relatively unfussed by me until I reach for my camera, then he bolts for cover. Probably he has some celebrity status that he needs to protect.
It warms up again tomorrow, they'll be scooped with the trash. The lure of peanut butter seems to have worn off for these mice...

No sooner had I posted last night then a tiny mouse lowered itself from the drawer in the kitchen to work on the chew. Not interested in the trap yet. And it goes to prove the adage that "You shouldn't count your mice when you can't see them", or something of that nature.

2 days now since the last mouse was relocated, the children have gone home to their mothers. It's probably too early to say, from the corners of my eyes I still catch little movements, phantoms of the mice that have gone into the great outdoors, but no traps have been sprung. There have been no rustlings from the garbage, no scrapings from the walls, no chewing from the cupboards, I think that may be it.
The house is as quiet as the grave.
I will post later, there is much to write about tonight, but it will take me some hours to gather and organize my thoughts.

Bringing it to a total of 8 in 2 days. 8 mice in 2 days, 3 in 1/2 an hour (a busy spell). I've been trying to relocate them to roughly the same back area of the garden in the compost, I've added some of the old hamster food there so their comfortable. Hopefully that keeps 'em. I'm starting to think I've got to be running out of mice soon....

Since yesterday the trap has been sprung 5 times. 3 mice have been captured relocated to more outdoorsy surroundings, running pell mell across the snow, back and forth, confused by the bright sunlight, wide open spaces. They should be OK, there's plenty of bird feeders in the neighborhood, if they settle into the right hedge they'll never be hungry. Or so I tell myself. I know there's at least 2 more, but the trap will only hold one at a time. So I've set it up again and am waiting. The remaining mice have grown cautious, they've undoubtedly notice a thinning of the ranks. Gone is the line at the chew. It's a waiting game...
