I'm in Edmonton. It's not the Edmonton I remember, not the Edmonton that's ever been, narrow streets lined with old sandstone buildings, green awnings over the pavement, grey and wet outside, warm and inviting shop windows, pedestrians. I've run into Nicole, haven't seen her for years, she's with a couple of friends, we're talking, catching up, when Steve walks by. He doesn't notice me, I haven't seen him for years either, he looks good, craggy features, well dressed, I recognize Steve but he looks more like Daniel Craig from the Bond films, he's going somewhere with an intent look on his face. I excuse myself from Nicole and her friends to pursue him. I'll find them later in a cafe, one of the old-school long and dimly lit diners, yellow lights & nicotine stained walls, vinyl booths, jukeboxes at every tables, chinese & western food... . .
I run down the street after Steve but he's disappeared. I cut through a high sandstone building that seems only to be there as a shortcut, a stairwell in, downstairs, high ceiling, another stairwell up and out at ninety degrees to the first. People inside talking about how the building is there to prevent road rage.....
Outside, still no Steve so I walk down the street, find my apartment, a walk up, too bright lighting inside, I'm on the top floor, walking up the stairs I go too far, come to a wall, turn around, go back down to the landing and enter my apartment. Through the kitchen to a bedroom, squalid, small, I've never been here before either. "She must still be at work" I think to myself as I fall asleep, I'll tell her about seeing Steve when I wake up, there's something very wrong with this, how could I live here? And I wake up and she's still not home and I realize she's not coming home, she's never lived here, how could I have forgotten. And I wake up again, strangely out of sorts, another odd dream....

I'm in a cinema to see the new Start Trek movie. They've done a good job of it, the whole cinema is done up and shaped like the USS Enterprise with various levels and lobbies, I've taken a seat in one of the command chairs on the Bridge and buckled myself in to enjoy the show. And I can't remember the show, but I remember playing with some buttons on the side of the chair and watching as the Enterprise crashed and burned, feeling somehow responsible, but then I realize that it's only a movie and that my pressing the buttons aren't related to it's crashing. But Sulu doesn't see it that way, he's mad at me, Sulu the character, Sulu a composite of Asian Trekkie fans and Martial Arts experts that I have known, Sulu's blaming me for the wreck of the Enterprise, he's going to get revenge, and somebody advises me to leave and I'm not sure if I should be worried about Sulu the Trekkie but I know I should be worried about Sulu the Martial Arts expert and I'm bored with the movie now anyways so I leave and go to the lobby. There's a handbag, unattended, filled with expensive looking jewellry and on a whim I grab it and stuff my sweater, quickly leaving the cinema.
Outside the cinema I'm trying to arrange the jewellry under my sweater, to make the theft less obvious, wondering too late if there was a camera inside the theatre that recorded the theft. It's a beautiful summer evening, the cinema - starship has landed in a field, I'm regretting now stealing the stuff.....
Note: Damned odd dream. But cues that may have led to it - an email from my brother stating that the new "Star Trek" trailer looked good. And my boy's mother just had her handbag stolen from her car, with credit cards and passports. But no sense as far as I can see....

I've somehow made the decision to show "The Exorcist" to my 12 year old boy. I've glossed over the girl-crucifix scene, I can just ffwd it or cover his eyes when we get there.
We, he or I, are in a village on top of a small mountain or large hill. It's a beautiful sunny evening, that warm, sad light of evening. And there's about to be a flood. The kids are just leaving school, and the water comes rising over a lip at the end of the street, rising and everything is being swept away. I'm in the flood, hauling children out to higher ground, feeling around for them with my feet. I find a couple of things of laundry detergent, I was carrying them and lost them, it seems stupid now, unimportant, but I take them out as well and carry them to the banks.
The flood is rising, and I keep going into the water, into the street, to look for people, but I'm not finding anyone. SO I go up the sidestreet, there's a large burgundy SUV, the boys' father is riding around in it through the countryside, telling the boy that he's just gotta sort things out, he's gonna get a jeep, the boy can have the old stationwagon. And I wonder why the mainstreet has flooded when, from here, looking around, we're the highest point in the countryside, nothing else is flooded, the water must have run uphill to the village.... It really is a beautiful evening, golden rays of light through dark and broken cumulus clouds, a perfect moment that fills me with sadness that it can't last forever....
And I think to myself "This is just like the movie, just the way I remembered it....."

I'm riding somewhere through South-East Asia in a Tuk-Tuk, speeding through the mountains. We go through villages, then speed up again, circling the mountains - there are many tunnels, or caves, rather, with roads built through them. We're getting smaller as we go, our size reducing, but everything else is getting smaller along with us, so it's hard to notice. Passing through a village we enter another cave, speeding up and driving on the left side, on the ceiling of the right side there hang all these condom stalactites, they look to be used, the driver won't stop to let me take a look, they seem large but that's only because we've been shrinking. It's like some sort of sacred alter hewn into the mountain. I think I remember an explanation from National Geographic for this, the condoms collect water.... Leaving the last of the light behind us we're plunged into complete darkness before rounding a corner, the exit is ahead and light streams through it, there's a motorcycle coming straight at us, it loses control and goes off the edge of a precipice. We pull over to look, the bike and driver are lost somewhere far below, the sunlight doesn't reach into the depths of the cave. It's an abyss. We've seen a lot of accidents on this road, he doesn't want to stop and help, there isn't time, we get back in the tuk-tuk and speed off. I don't know where we're going.

I've got to go over to R**'s to fix his computer. He picks me up with a client and announce they've acquired some perverted domain - somethingperverse.com, R** is boasting about what a deal it was - "Only $400" he says, he's going to use it to link back to the sites I've been working on to drive them up in the search engines. I don't see the point, the site we're working has nothng to do with this at all, still....They stop a little mall, they have to run inside for a moment.
Outside the mall is a small parking lot, surrounded on all sides by short red brick buildings. It's very green, trees, lawn. I'm waiting outside. It begins to rain. Looking around I spot a small arcade, and think to go inside, I recognize it, familiar somehow, perhaps from another dream.
Inside there's a man behind glass to make change, another room you can go into to play the games, looking through the window I see a Ms. Pac Man game, I have a quarter, but wonder if I won't be too long, I can play for a while on this game. Water is dripping through the ceiling, somebody apologizes, bangs it with a broom and the water stops. I go back outside.
It's still raining, and I realize that I'm not supposed to fix the computer until tomorrow. And so I stop waiting for R** and begin to walk home.
There's a field outside a school, very green, like British Columbia or Vancouver in the fall, and it's still raining, but there's a thunderbolt and the rain turns into Hershey Kisses, quickly I fill my pockets, I find a small, elegantly wrapped egg in sheer plastic wrap and a bunny in foil, recognizing them to be Bernard Callebaut I pick them up as well.
And I'm walking home, alongside a narrow green strip of park, swinging the foil bunny and plastic wrapped egg beside me in a bag, congratulating myself on my good luck and eating the Hershey Kisses.
I notice a badger. He's walking alongside me, looking over and noticing me, he growls. I think it's unusual to see a badger, especially in the city, then he runs at me and makes to bite me. I knock him gently out of the way with my bag, he tries it again, I knock him away again. This is very odd, the badger isn't working very hard, I think....
There's a kiosk and a young plump blonde is working behind it in the park, an information booth of sorts, so I stop and tell her about the badger. She doesn't think it's odd. I explain how it's been pursuing me and trying to attack me and she thinks about this for a moment, looking confused, then says: "I know, I think it has rabies...". I'd already had the same thought. I persuade her to leave the kiosk, we'll trap the badger inside and call the SPCA before it bites anyone. She reluctantly agrees.
The badger comes after me again, and I sweep it up with the bag and into the kiosk. We can hear in there, it's annoyed...A green recycling tub is inside the kiosk, with some dirty water from the rainfall, I think to open it and get the badger inside, again I trap it in my plastic bag and throw it into the tub, it splashes, then sinks in the water bubbling, and I worry the badger might drown.... we close the tub lightly and tip it to let the water out, it strains out, through the lid I glimpse the badger nonchalantly lying on it's back eating a chocolate cookie. We take the tub out of the Kiosk and the blonde goes back inside, she's going to call the SPCA. A woman with her child stop, they crouch down by the tub, the plump blonde comes out again to open the tub slightly and allow the child to reach in and pet the badger...
